Description

For the appropriate diagnosis of a particular pathogen, proper knowledge of the laboratory design, challenges associated in diagnosis and knowledge of different virological techniques is very much important. This course on advanced virological techniques is directed towards the laboratory personnel and professionals who work in or are planning to set up an advanced diagnostic virology laboratory.

The course has eight units and includes theory classes with practical sessions wherever applicable.

    • Unit 1 Syndromic approach addresses the importance of a syndromic approach in diagnostic virology
    • Unit 2 Sample processing covers the process of collection, packaging, transport and processing of the sample
    • Unit 3 Isolation of virus includes the cell culture techniques involved and different methods of use in the isolation of virus from the sample
    • Unit 4 Quantification of the virus. We will turn out attention towards various methods of quantification of virus including tissue culture infective does 50, plaque assay, hemagglutination assay
    • Unit 5. Neutralisation of the virus. This unit will focus on the different neutralisation techniques like micro-neutralisation assay, plaque reduction and neutralisation assay, hemagglutination inhibition assay
    • Unit 6 Diagnostics methods. In this unit diagnostics methods like conventional polymerase chain reaction(PCR), real-time PCR (Uniplex and multiplex) and immunofluorescence assay will be taught and shown.
    • Unit 7 Challenges in diagnostics. This unit gives details about challenges in the diagnosis of arboviral disease, acute encephalitis syndrome, respiratory viral disease at different stages from sample collection to diagnosis.
    • Unit 8 Virology laboratory design. This unit focuses on the design of the virology laboratory based on the different biosafety levels (BSL).
